The Battle of Britain Memorial on the clifftop at Capel-le-Ferne is home to the National Memorial to The Few. It commemorates the fewer than-3,000 men of the Royal Air Force who won the Battle of Britain between 10 July and 31 October 1940 and in doing so kept this country free from a Nazi invasion.

The external features of the site include replica Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft, a stainless steel Stuka sculpture and the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, which lists the names of every airman known to have qualified as one of ‘the Few’ by flying at least one operational sortie with a recognised squadron or unit of Fighter Command between the required dates. At the heart of the site is the National Memorial to the Few, an enigmatic carving of an airman gazing contemplatively out over The Channel.

Complementing this peaceful place of pilgrimage is The Wing, a modern visitor centre in the shape of a Spitfire wing. The Wing includes The Scramble Experience, a high-tech, audio-visual introduction to the battle that changed history, along with a well-stocked shop and a first-floor café with unbeatable views across The Channel to France.

The Scramble Experience’s touchscreens, contemporary film and audio footage and information panels tell the story of the Battle of Britain, while hands-on attractions include the chance to shoot down enemy aircraft from a mock-up Hurricane cockpit. A unique film, made specifically for the Trust, gives an insight into the lives of the men who fought in the long, hot summer of 1940 and reduced one of ‘the Few’ to tears when he first saw it.
