East Kent Railway

The East Kent Light Railway was used to transport coal from Tilmanstone to Shepherdswell, with stations at Eythorne and Shepherdswell. Building started in 1911 and the line closed in 1987. We have railway stock dating back to the 1930's, with more modern stock also in use. There are two steam trains undergoing restoration and will be in use at EKR for the next 6 years. We also have the Barham signaling box with interactive signaling.
We are currently renovatin World War Two trenches, which are inside the Knees Woodland area. These trenches were built in 1939/40 to defend East Kent against a German invasion. Conducted tours are available. Additionally, we have on display three World War Two-era US military vehicles. Also within the woodland area are several World War Two Dragons Teeth (these are anti-tanks traps),
which were placed at the end of the cutting to prevent German tanks from gaining access to the
Dover-London mainline.
Other attractions include: 7 1/4 Inch and 5 inch minature railways; and very extensive model railawy exhibition in the Walmer Model Railway coach, with two coaches and multiple model railways on dislays. At the Eythore station we have a signal box at Eythorne, available to look around; a 1930's electric shunter and other ralway-related exhibits.
