Folkestone's Fishing Heritage and History Museum provides a practical display inviting curiosity into a deeper understanding of Folkestone's fishing over the years.
The 'hands on' features foster a desire for involvement, and the ships bell and hand operated fog horn will appeal to youngsters. Tying knots, rope splicing, and how to breed meshes on a net can all be shown, and ropes are provided for those wishing to acquaint themselves with such skills.
Two visual displays show practical fishing in its widest sense, and many types of equipment in use. Conditions at sea and extreme weather are not avoided, so bringing the reality of the hazardous lives of fishermen in pursuit of food for our tables. There are rare stereo picture cards taken of vessels in Folkestone harbour when photography was in its infancy, and you can watch live ship movements in the English Channel, and hear comments from Dover Harbour Board and the Coast Guards on two marine radio receivers.
